Set of 2 Vintage Vases in Metal Brass
This pair of hammered and engraved casings with Art Deco motifs is a beautiful example of French Trench Art (« Art des tranchées ») from WWI (1914-1918). Some soldiers were highly skilled craftsmen in civilian life – goldsmiths, engravers, coppersmiths – or farmers with great manual dexterity in the manufacture of folk art objects. Forced into inaction and immobility by trench warfare, and with large quantities of metal at their disposal, they developed this popular craft to stave off boredom and retain their humanity.
Each casing is made of solid brass and was hand-hammered and engraved with a heron and a reed, two recurring motifs of the Art Deco period. Dimensions: H35 × W8 × D8 cm (H13.8" × W3.1" × D3.1") These tall, slender vases work well for single stems or dried arrangements. The Art Deco design suits dining rooms, console tables, or mantelpieces. Their vintage patina adds character to collected displays.
