An intimate portrait study showcasing the ethereal and atmospheric style characteristic of the English artist William Arthur Breakespeare (1856-1914). The work depicts a contemplative portrait rendered in rich flesh tones contrasted with a richly textured dark background showing a skilled handling of light and shadow. Though not widely recognised today, Breakespeare was a prominent member of the Birmingham Art Circle and his distinctive work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London (1883-1893). He trained at the Birmingham Government School of Design, Charles Verlat's Academy in Antwerp and in Paris. English, c.1880s, Oil on canvas mounted on a later board. Title on verso 'Portrait of Lady by WA Breakspeare. Good condition - some dirt, marks and retouching to canvas. Re-framed in a deep black wood frame at Bergevalls Ramar, Stockholm.
