Nuvola Suspension Lamp by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, 1960s

Discover this iconic ‘Nuvola’ suspension lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, dating from the 1960s. The design exemplifies the experimental approach to materials and form that defined Italian lighting during this period. The lamp features an organic, cloud-like silhouette formed around a delicate metal framework and enveloped in a translucent fibrous membrane. Its series of softly curved volumes gives the pendant an almost weightless appearance, changing subtly depending on the viewing angle. When illuminated, the delicate surface beautifully diffuses the light, revealing the internal structure while producing a warm and atmospheric glow. The natural irregularities and aged character of the membrane add depth to the surface and emphasize the sculptural qualities of the design. With its combination of technical experimentation and expressive form, the Nuvola is a distinctive example of the Castiglioni brothers’ approach to Italian modernist lighting. Equally compelling illuminated or switched off, it functions as both a light source and a sculptural presence within an interior. The lamp remains in good original vintage condition, showing visible traces of age and use consistent with its period. Measurements: H 41 x Ø 36 cm
