Modernist Pewter Vase by Sylvia Stave, 1935, Sweden

Price$700.00
One-of-a-kind piece
This pewter vase was designed by silversmith Sylvia Stave for the Stockholm firm C.G. Hallberg, and is dated 1935 according to the base markings. The fluted conical body and stacked scroll handles mark the transition from Art Deco toward the more restrained functionalism emerging at the time — a balance Stave navigated particularly well. The pewter has developed a warm, deep patina consistent with its age, lending the piece an honest character. Works equally well holding a small arrangement of stems or displayed on its own as a sculptural accent. ylvia Stave (1908–1994) is considered one of Sweden's most significant modernist designers. Appointed artistic director of C.G. Hallberg at just 23, she designed in silver and pewter throughout the 1930s before abandoning her career after moving to Paris in 1940s. Her work is held in the collection of the Nationalmuseum, among others.
