MATERA Armchair in Wood and Textile

Designed by SEBASTIEN KIEFER Matera is a contemporary furniture collection in which structure is not applied to the material, but emerges from it. Hollowed out, carved from the mass, each piece appears revealed rather than constructed. Echoing the rock-hewn dwellings of Matera and Petra, the collection operates within a logic of contemporary archaeology. It presents furniture shaped through subtraction, where the material itself carries the memory of gesture and territory. This approach highlights the foundations of the Mercoeur brand: craftsmanship, inhabited landscape, and a deliberate sense of territoriality. Each piece becomes a marker of rootedness, expressing a constructive culture in which use unfolds over time. Dense, substantial, and enduring, Matera tells less the story of an object than of a process—one of excavation, occupation, and transmission. Furniture to inhabit, where material becomes language, and where void structures as much as mass.
