Vintage book 'Matisse, The Masterworks' (1989)

Gérard Durozoi recounts Matisse's artistic evolution, who, despite a conventional legal education, discovers his passion for painting after receiving a gift from his mother during his recovery from an operation.

Despite paternal opposition, he moves to Paris in 1891 to study with prominent masters, including Bougereau and Gustave Moreau. After exploring initial styles, his encounter with Mediterranean light and the influence of Cézanne lead him to create his significant work, "Luxe, Calme et Volupté" (1904), a prelude to his famous fauvist canvases. The growing international fame propels Matisse to continue experimenting with light, color, sculpture, and ceramics, delving into themes such as still lifes, oriental design, dance, and nudes.

Hardcover version with 48 full-color plates in this volume, each accompanied by detailed text, illustrate Matisse's range of works, from the smallest figurative oils of the early 20th century to the almost abstract forms of the innovative paper cut-outs and collages he produced in his later years.
