French Shepherd’s Stool by Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet, France 1950s

This rare mid-century French shepherd’s stool was designed by Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet in the 1950s and is a beautiful expression of their deeply material-driven and vernacular approach to design. Rooted in rural tradition yet unmistakably modern, the stool reflects the duo’s fascination with artisanal techniques and humble, natural materials. The circular seat is made out from tightly woven raffia/rattan, creating a rich tactile surface with subtle tonal variations. It rests on a solid oak wooden base supported by three gently tapered tripod legs, giving the stool both visual lightness and excellent stability. The simple, almost archetypal form results in a strong sculptural presence, where function and craftsmanship are perfectly balanced. Originally conceived as utilitarian seating inspired by shepherd stools from the French countryside, this piece effortlessly transcends its origins to function today as a low seat, side stool, or accent piece in both rustic and contemporary interiors. The stool remains in very good original condition, with the woven seat and wooden structure beautifully preserved, showing only gentle signs of age consistent with its time.
