Early PK22 Lounge Chairs by Poul Kjærholm for E. Kold Christensen, Denmark 1960s

An exceptional pair of early PK22 lounge chairs designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark during the 1960s. Originally designed in 1956, the PK22 is one of Kjærholm’s most recognizable works, defined by its exceptionally refined construction and reduction of form. The slender profile combines a precisely formed steel frame with a suspended seat and back, creating a light architectural presence while retaining a remarkably comfortable seating position. This pair retains its original black leather, beautifully aged over decades of use. The leather displays a rich natural patina, with subtle variations, creasing and traces of wear that emphasize the authenticity and character of these early examples. The distinctive geometric stitching further accentuates the construction of the continuous leather surface. The brushed steel frames show an equally attractive age-related patina, providing a restrained contrast to the deep black leather. Their uncompromising construction illustrates Kjærholm’s ability to treat steel with the same sensitivity traditionally associated with wood and other natural materials. Both chairs are signed with the E. Kold Christensen manufacturer’s mark, confirming their early production.
