Calacatta Viola Marble and Oak Coffee Table - HIRADO Series
The Hirado is a Calacatta Viola marble and oak coffee table, a generous low table built to sit at the centre of a room. The stone leads and a solid oak base carries it, the two materials held in deliberate balance. Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, known in Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Its cool white ground is crossed by violet, burgundy, and plum veining drawn with the ease of brushwork. Beneath the stone, solid oak in a honey tone warms to the marble above so the marble and oak read as one pairing. Each top is cut from its own block, so no two of these marble and oak coffee tables are quite alike. The oak carries the weight. Two solid oak boards interlock at right angles into a cross-leg base, one passing cleanly through the other, the joinery left in full view as the piece's single gesture of craft. Stone meets wood with nothing worked in between.
