Ebonized Bobbin Turned Baby Sutherland Table England Late 19th Century
A wonderful and rare victorian ‘Baby Sutherland’ table in bobbin turned ebonized wood. England, late 19th century. The Sutherland table is a specific type of English drop-leaf table that developed in the late 19th century, during the Victorian period. It is named after Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland. She was a good friend of Queen Victoria and a prominent aristocratic hostess.
The design is believed to have been created to suit the practical needs of entertaining in smaller interiors. She was known for serving tea on these types of tables. It is characterized by its narrow central section and two hinged drop leaves. When not in use, the leaves hang vertically allowing the table to occupy minimal space. Our particular Sutherland table is a so called ‘Baby Sutherland’, since it is a side or occasional table opposed to a dining table. The wonderful bobbin turned legs and the - original - stunning ebonized finish only add to the speciality of this table. A rare and wonderful piece.
