Antique Swedish Wedding Tapestry, 1851
A remarkable piece of Swedish cultural heritage dating to 1851, this ceremonial wedding tapestry represents the rich tradition of Scandinavian folk art. Hand-embroidered with wool on linen using traditional Swedish needlework techniques, it showcases intricate floral rosettes and geometric patterns. The tapestry bears the original date and initials, created to commemorate a wedding celebration.
These elaborate textiles served dual purposes - both as functional cushions for sitting on in horse-drawn carriages, and as prestigious status symbols, with their intricate embroidery demonstrating the family's social and economic standing within the community. After 170+ years, this piece remains remarkably well-preserved, though it naturally shows the gentle patina of age including some minor thread loosening that adds to its authentic character.
The tapestry includes original small loops along the top edge for hanging - thread a thin rope or cord through these loops, or attach small rings to the loops for hanging on hooks.
