Decanter, by Simon Gate for Sandvik/Orrefors, 1920s - 1930's (2)
Created by Swedish glassmaker and designer Simon Gate in the 1920s-1930s, this elegant Orrefors Sandvik decanter boasts a light brown tone and exquisite shapes and lines. Gate, who was trained at the College of Technology in Stockholm and the Academy of Art, joined Orrefors Glass Factory in 1916 and quickly rose to prominence. Founded in 1898, Orrefors was a leading player in the Scandinavian modernism movement, known for its superb art glass craftsmanship and innovative designs. Gate and fellow artist Edward Hald garnered international attention at the 1925 Paris design fair, where Orrefors showcased their unique pieces that blended Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Throughout his 30-year career with Orrefors, Gate focused on refining traditional glassmaking techniques and introducing a vibrant range of colors, while maintaining a conservative style informed by classic European models. Gate's unexpected passing in 1945 marked the end of an era and solidified his legacy.
