A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a document issued by a reputable source that confirms the genuineness of an artwork. A monumental pair of brass torchères, each standing 190 cm high, formerly part of the furnishings of the Hotel Ritz Lisbon, one of Portugal’s defining post-war interiors. Exceptionally slender reeded brass columns rise from substantial 30 cm sculptural avian bases to broad 35 cm uplighter bowls. The bases are particularly remarkable: four elongated swan-form supports are finely modelled with deeply incised plumage, concentrating almost all of the ornament at floor level while the rest of the structure remains remarkably severe. Opened in 1959, the Hotel Ritz brought modern architecture together with interiors of considerable decorative ambition. Its principal prestige spaces were conceived by acclaimed French decorator Henri Samuel, whose overall scheme combined an Art Deco tendency with Louis XVI references and the exceptional workmanship of Portuguese craftsmen. At 190 cm, their presence is architectural. The extraordinary proportion between the narrow reeded shafts, sculptural bases and oversized bowls transforms a fundamentally classical form into something almost abstract. As a pair, they establish two emphatic vertical lines in a room, functioning as much as spatial elements as sources of light. The brass retains a rich aged surface with variations in tone, oxidation and patina consistent with age and use. These traces have been preserved rather than polished away.
