Bronze Rhubarb Table
This solid bronze side table by Jess Wheeler is cast directly from life. Inspired by the early emergence of rhubarb from wintered soil—growing first with hesitation and then with vibrant abundance—each piece captures the spirit of Spring’s awakening.
As a child, Jessie was taken by her grandmother, along with her siblings, to the family rhubarb patch. Towering leaves loomed above them like fairytale parasols, and together they would gather the vivid pink stalks to cook, pickle, and share. That cherished ritual remains a source of joy, and even now, Jessie feels a thrill each year when the first shoots pierce the soil.
In this collection, she seeks to preserve that sense of wonder, play, and seasonal renewal. Wheeler casts oversized rhubarb leaves from life, transforming their exuberant forms into tactile, functional sculptures. The legs of the table are formed from three uniquely angled stems she discovered, each with natural flicks at their base that suggested delicate ‘feet’—a serendipitous fit for supporting a table.
Using the lost wax process, she captures even the subtlest textures: the raw edge where the stem was torn from the earth remains visible, inviting touch and connection. A dark patina coats each piece, while the extremities have been hand-rubbed to reveal the fine intricacies of the leaf veins and stem surfaces beneath.
Every table is handcrafted, and therefore entirely unique. Variations in form and detail ensure that no two pieces are ever exactly alike—each one a singular celebration of nature’s elegance and imperfection.
