Our interest in art began in childhood, shaped by the influence of our families and surroundings. Nata’s family, for example, is filled with architectural historians and architects. Over time, our broad interest in the arts gradually narrowed to design. For me, a defining moment was the realization (and joy) that design could be a profession I could actually pursue.
Rooms Studio: Emotional Design in Every Detail
What first drew you to the world of art and design? Was there a defining moment or experience that set you on this path?
Can you tell us about your creative process? How do ideas come to life for you, from the first spark to the finished piece?
Our creative process is an ongoing exchange between the two of us, and it unfolds differently every time. An idea might emerge from a random moment while walking or during a conversation as we sit and talk. These moments of inspiration spark the foundation for what follows. From there, we move on to the practical side of the concept—if it’s an interior design project, our thinking process starts with exploring the space and its surroundings. For our furniture collection pieces, we collaborate closely with local artisans. Even during production, things often shift and evolve. Sometimes, the final piece ends up entirely different from where we started—but we trust this process and its unpredictability.
Materials often tell their own stories. How do you choose your materials, and what kind of dialogue do they create within your work?
We’re instinctively drawn to natural materials like wood, stone, and metal. These materials are also readily available in Georgia, where our practice is based. They create an interplay—a conversation that seeks balance within our work.
How has your style or approach evolved over the years? Were there pivotal moments that shaped your evolution as an artist/designer?
I guess the Wild Minimalism collection was a pivotal moment for us, as it defined our visual language. Before that, we were in a period of exploration, searching for our identity as artists. Over the years, our approach to design has evolved greatly, and it remains an ongoing, ever-evolving process.
Your work often balances personal expression and external expectations. How do you navigate that?
For us, what we do is deeply personal; our entire practice is rooted in expressing our internal worlds. We focus on materializing personal emotions, and while we are aware of external expectations, our approach remains true to our own vision.
What role does art and design play in today’s rapidly changing world? Do you feel it has a responsibility or specific function in addressing contemporary issues?
Of course, art and design are directly connected to the world we live in. And yes, it certainly carries a responsibility, and we feel it's important to be aware and reactive to the processes that are happening around us.
Where do you turn for inspiration? Are there rituals, places, or people that continually spark your creativity?
Random places, fragments of everyday life, fleeting observations—all met with an inner urgency to respond, to translate what’s seen into something felt.
What excites you most about the future? Are there new ideas, collaborations, or mediums you’re eager to explore?
We’re really excited about opening a new Rooms Studio space in London and can’t wait to see it come to life.
