Ravinet d’Enfert Art Deco Smoking Set in Original Box | France - c. 1950s

A beautiful smoking set by Ravinet d’Enfert, Paris, comprising a small ashtray, matching tumbler and fitted matchbox holder. The three pieces have a wonderfully restrained geometric character, with clean forms, circular detailing and finely worked borders. There is a quiet elegance to the set, recalling the refined geometry of French Art Deco. Ravinet d’Enfert was one of Paris’s established houses of silversmithing, founded in 1891 by Louis Ravinet and Charles d’Enfert. From its home at 83 rue du Temple in the Marais, the house produced both silver and silver-plated wares, exhibiting at the great international exhibitions of the early 20th century. Its designs evolved with the times, from Art Nouveau and Art Deco through to the modernism of the 1960s and 70s. The house also produced pieces retailed by distinguished French houses including Hermès, with documented Ravinet d’Enfert smoking sets sold through Hermès in the mid-20th century. This set remains together in its original Ravinet d’Enfert presentation box, with its soft red fabric lining. The original matchbox is still inside, complete with its pink-headed matches — a particularly charming detail that brings a little of its former life back to the piece. Made for a ritual of another era, each piece has its own quiet purpose. Today, gathered together around candlelight, they can take on a new ritual of their own.
