Antoine Callebaut Monumental Table Lamp in Bronze, Belgium 1970s
This is a unique and monumental (106 cm / 42 inch in height) table lamp by Antoine Callebaut. Belgium, mid to late 1970s. Never we’ve seen a table lamp this impressive before. It is monumental in size and demands attention instantly due to the size and highly distinctive design. The main body of the lamp is made out of cast bronze and shows a remarkable semi abstract bas-relief pattern of floral nature.
The bronze has patinated in a wonderful way, creating a very interesting and tactile visual landscape. For many years, Antoine Callebaut worked closely with Jules Wabbes and was called ‘The Man of Steel’ because of his involvement in every single piece that was made out of metal, brass, copper or bronze in the Wabbes atelier. They worked closely together on the production of these high end pieces. He was an indispensable and hugely important figure in the creation of Jules Wabbes's body of work.
This very lamp shows exactly the same wonderful construction to hold the lampshade as can be found on all the Wabbes lamps, including the famous ‘Hexagonal’ series of table lamps. After the death of Jules Wabbes he created the ‘Atelier Antoine Callebaut’ and moved on to create small series of high end lamps, garden lamps and accessories - working together with designer Jan Vlug, garden and landscape designer Jacques Wirtz and architect André Jacqmain. This lamp most possibly was created during this period of his career.
Due to the size, execution and design we believe this to be a bespoke piece made to order for one of his clients. The works by Callebaut are extremely rare - even more special than pieces by Jules Wabbes - and to find such a spectacular table lamp by his hand is highly remarkable. The lamp comes in a highly original and untouched condition with a very desirable patina. Originally - EU - wired.
