Tree Tops Floor Lamp by Ron Arad for Zeus, 1984

An extraordinary Tree Tops floor lamp, designed by Ron Arad in 1984 and produced by Zeus. The Tree Tops perfectly embodies Arad’s experimental approach to design, blurring the boundaries between functional lighting and sculpture. Rising from a substantial rounded cement base, a slender black steel structure divides into two irregular, branch-like arms, creating an expressive silhouette reminiscent of a tree. Each arm terminates in a flexible gooseneck, allowing the individual light sources to be bent, positioned and directed as desired. This combination of rigid steel and flexible elements gives the lamp an almost animated quality, with its appearance changing according to the positioning of the branches. The contrast between the raw, heavy cement base and the remarkably slender metal structure is characteristic of Arad’s exploration of industrial materials. Despite its impressive height, the open construction gives the lamp a light and graphic presence within an interior. Designed during the early and highly experimental period of Ron Arad’s career, the Tree Tops is a striking example of his unconventional approach to furniture and lighting design. Its irregular geometry and exposed construction transform a functional floor lamp into a sculptural object. Measurements: H 210 x W 140 x D 45 cm
