Set of 3 Primitive French Wooden Chairs, 1940s–1950s

A highly characterful set of three primitive wooden chairs originating from France, dating from approximately the 1940s–1950s. Defined by their uncompromising construction and beautifully aged surfaces, the chairs have a distinctly architectural presence. Each chair is composed of broad wooden planks forming the seat, front support and unusually tall backrest. A diagonal brace connects the seat to the rear structure, creating a strong geometric profile while providing additional stability. The exposed construction and restrained use of materials give the chairs an honest, almost elemental quality. The wood retains a deep, naturally developed patina, with pronounced grain, tonal variations, old marks, scratches and irregularities throughout. These traces of age are an important part of the character of the set and emphasize their vernacular origins. Although rooted in traditional utilitarian furniture, the radical simplicity of the construction gives the chairs a sculptural quality that feels remarkably contemporary. Their combination of raw material, strong geometry and functional construction places them naturally within both Primitive and Brutalist interiors. The three chairs are preserved in good vintage condition, with considerable wear and patina consistent with their age and history. Priced and sold as a set.
