Rare Chair and Matching Stool by Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet, France 1950s

An unusual and highly characterful chair and matching stool by Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet, France, 1950s. Both pieces combine substantial dark-stained wooden structures with thick, circular seats woven from natural fibre. The contrast between the almost primitive construction of the frames and the richly textured braided seats is strongly associated with the material language found throughout the work of Audoux and Minet during this period. The low chair is particularly striking.

Two strongly angled front legs support the circular woven seat, while a single elongated rear element rises into a gently curved backrest. A simple opening near the top adds a distinctive graphic detail. The accompanying tripod stool repeats the same combination of dark wood, splayed legs and tightly braided seat, creating a remarkably cohesive ensemble. Both pieces have developed a deep patina, with visible wear and irregularities to the wooden surfaces and natural variation throughout the woven fibre.

These traces of age reinforce their rustic, sculptural character.
