Pair of Spanish Bobbin-Turned Side Chairs, Early 20th Century

A highly decorative pair of Spanish side chairs dating to the early 20th century, distinguished by their exaggerated bobbin-turned construction and beautifully aged surfaces. Each chair is defined by four substantial uprights composed of deeply rounded, repeated turnings, giving the frames a bold sculptural rhythm.

The tall backs are joined by two shaped horizontal splats with subtle cut-out details, while more finely turned stretchers connect the legs below. The dark wooden beech frames have developed a rich, warm patina with visible wear, tonal variation and age-related marks throughout. In contrast, the woven rush seats introduce a lighter natural texture, with a tightly woven geometric pattern that complements the strong character of the frames.

The chairs are rather small in scale and not particularly comfortable for prolonged seating. They are therefore best considered as decorative accent chairs rather than everyday chairs. Their compact proportions and striking silhouettes make them especially appealing placed in a hallway, bedroom or living space, where they can function as sculptural objects as much as occasional seating.
