Pair of Sculptural Bamboo Pedestals, Italy, 1960s

A striking pair of sculptural bamboo pedestals from Italy, dating to the 1960s, combining a classical columnar silhouette with the lightness and rhythm of natural bamboo. Each pedestal is constructed from numerous slender bamboo rods arranged vertically around the column. Towards the base, the individual elements curve elegantly outward in a radial formation, creating a beautifully graphic foot. The same movement is echoed at the top, where the bamboo gently flares beneath the circular platform. Finished in white, the closely spaced bamboo creates a strong play of line, light and shadow. From a distance, the design recalls the fluting of a classical column, while the exposed construction gives the pieces a distinctly modern and sculptural character. The tall, slender proportions make them ideal as display pedestals for ceramics, plants or sculptural objects, while the pair is equally compelling when left unadorned.
