One-of-a-kind piece
  • EXCLUSIVE WORK
A striking piece of hand-blown studio art glass by Romanian artist Mihai Țopescu, combining an intense sun-yellow centre with layers of clear glass worked into an expressive overlaid lattice of fine lines, loops and rounded droplets. Born in Romania in 1956, Țopescu developed his practice within the country’s important glassmaking tradition before establishing his own studio. His work explores the sculptural possibilities of hot glass, bringing together colour, transparency, weight and light in distinctive and highly tactile forms. Internationally exhibited, Țopescu’s work has been shown at the Venice Biennale, the International Glass Exhibition in Kanazawa, Japan, and the Coburg Prize for Contemporary Glass. His work is held in international museum and institutional collections, including the European Parliament, the Glass Museum in Coburg, Germany, and the Glass Museum in Ebeltoft, Denmark. This bowl beautifully reflects his fascination with the possibilities of glass. Its intense sun-yellow centre appears to glow beneath the clear glass, creating a wonderful contrast between saturated colour and transparency. The raised lattice catches the light from every angle, while the rounded details cast intricate shadows across the surface beneath. There is a wonderful tension between weight and delicacy. At 820 grams, the bowl has a substantial physical presence, while its transparent layers and finely worked surface give it an almost luminous quality. Measuring 22 cm in diameter and 5 cm high, it has wonderful presence on a dining table or console. Beautiful as a catchall for jewelry and small objects, it can equally be left empty and appreciated as a sculptural work of art glass. The underside of the polished base bears Țopescu’s incised signature.
