Large Italian Brass Scallop Shell Catch-all, 1960s

Italy, 1960s. The scallop shell runs through the history of decorative arts, from the Renaissance to neoclassicism, and still inspired Italian silversmithing in the second half of the century. This large brass catch-all takes up the motif with real generosity. The bowl, in cast brass, follows the form of a shell with broad undulating ribs, edged with a scalloped rim. At the hinge, a relief decoration of scrolls and a palmette adds a baroque character. It rests on three small turned brass feet that lift it slightly off the table. Good condition of use: the brass shows an aged, uneven patina, with a few oxidation spots in the bowl and a darker underside, with no dents or deformation. A patina that gives the piece character. At 20.5 cm long by 18.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high, this catch-all sits on a console, entryway table or coffee table, for keys, jewellery or small objects. A decorative, warm object, between tradition and Italian elegance.
