Highly Collectible Clémenceau Stool by Domin & Genevrière, Maison Dominique 1957
A rare and highly collectible ‘Clémenceau’ stool designed by André Domin and Marcel Genevrière for Maison Dominique in 1957, presenting an exceptional example of post-war French modernist furniture with a distinctly industrial character. The stool is defined by its ingenious adjustable construction.
Four splayed pressed-metal legs rise towards a compact central mechanism, supporting a generously proportioned circular upholstered seat. The threaded central spindle allows the seat height to be adjusted by rotating it, while the exposed mechanical elements remain an integral part of the design. This example is particularly appealing for its all-original condition.
The deep green painted metal retains extensive natural wear, scratches and areas of exposed metal, resulting in a rich, untouched patina. The original dark upholstery shows corresponding traces of age and use, preserving the authentic character of the piece. Despite its utilitarian construction, the stool has a remarkably sculptural presence. The wide folded-metal legs, exposed mechanism and simple circular seat create a strong architectural silhouette that anticipates the functional language of later industrial design. Dating from 1957, the Clémenceau represents a fascinating moment in French post-war design, combining the refinement associated with Maison Dominique with a radically functional approach to materials and construction. An increasingly difficult model to find in such complete and original condition, this example is an important collector’s piece. Measurements: H 46.5 – 62 cm x Ø 34 cm
