First Edition Grand Prix Chairs Model 3130 by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, 1957

An exceptional first-edition set of four Grand Prix chairs, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. Originally introduced as Model 4130, the chair was presented at the Milan Triennale in 1957, where its distinctive sculptural form earned it the name by which it is known today: the Grand Prix chair. The design is characterized by its beautifully curved seat and distinctive wing-shaped backrest, formed as a continuous molded wooden shell. The organic silhouette is complemented by four slender beech legs, creating an elegant and remarkably light appearance. This early set is executed in teak with beech legs, displaying rich, warm tones and beautifully pronounced natural grain. The combination of woods gives these examples a particularly refined character and emphasizes the flowing lines of Jacobsen’s design. Each chair is signed underneath with the original “MADE BY FH DENMARK” manufacturer’s mark, confirming production by Fritz Hansen. Viewed from every angle, the Grand Prix demonstrates Jacobsen’s ability to combine functionality with a highly sculptural approach. The sweeping backrest, subtly raised edges of the seat and slender profile create a chair that remains instantly recognizable more than half a century after its introduction. The chairs retain a beautiful vintage character, with natural variations, subtle traces of use and patina consistent with their age. Presented together as a set of four, these early examples form a particularly striking and collectible ensemble. A timeless example of Danish modern design and one of Arne Jacobsen’s most distinctive chair designs. Measurements: H 75 x W 46.5 x D 53 x SH 42 cm
