De Coene Frères Art Deco Sideboard in Walnut and Burl Veneer Belgium 1930s
A truly exceptional art deco sideboard in beautifully expressive high gloss walnut and burl walnut veneers with solid brass keys. De Coene, Kortrijk, Belgium, around 1930. It is not often you encounter a piece this breathtakingly beautiful. The design of this De Coene sideboard is both impressive and restrained. Symmetrical and imposing, but streamlined at the same time. A timeless piece of furniture, restored to perfection. At either end two cabinets raised on very elegant plinths anchor the composition. Between them the central section curves inward, drawing the eye toward its focal point: a bar cabinet and a set of drawers with cylindrical pulls in solid brass.
Very art deco and distinctly modern for its time. The striking design, expressive - bookmatched - wood grain and the stylish details make for a highly exceptional sideboard that will be the center of attention in any interior. The sideboard comes in a very good and impressive condition. It is totally restored by a master craftsman and ready for the next 100 years.
About De Coene De Coene - or De Coene Frères / Kortrijkse Kunstwerkstede De Coene - was without any doubt the most important (art deco) furniture workshop in Belgium. After winning the Grand Prix at the famous 1925 ‘l'Exposition des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes’ exhibition in Paris, their name was set as the most important and high quality workshop for furniture and interior design. It was a total workshop where architecture, furniture, textiles, and ornament were conceived as a whole. De Coene also was a very innovative workshop, as Josef de Coene traveled to America in 1921 to purchase one of the earliest machines for creating laminated wood - in an effort to create smoother shapes and better quality furniture. Interestingly, after the height of the art deco period and World War II De Coene also became a renowned mid century furniture maker. It is very uncommon to find a manufacturer or workshop that peaks at very different styles and in very different periods in time.
