Early and rare Mickville chair by Philippe Starck for Driade, 1985

The ‘Mickville’ chair, designed by Philippe Starck in 1985 and produced by Driade, is a playful and highly unconventional example of 1980s postmodern design. Conceived as part of a series of folding furniture, the design transforms functionality into a distinctive sculptural object. Executed entirely in grey lacquered steel, the chair is reduced to a series of simple geometric elements. Three slender tubular legs support a circular seat with a softly rounded edge, while one leg extends vertically above the seat and terminates in a characteristic circular ring. This small graphic detail gives the otherwise minimal construction its unmistakable identity. An ingenious folding mechanism allows the chair to collapse into a remarkably compact form. Rather than simply disappearing when folded, the construction takes on a new architectural silhouette, reflecting Starck’s interest in objects that challenge conventional ideas of form and function. The design can consequently be interpreted as both seating and a small occasional table. The monochromatic grey finish emphasizes the purity of the construction and gives the piece an understated industrial character. The chair remains in good original vintage condition, with only minimal signs of age and use. The grey lacquered finish has been well preserved, retaining its clean and refined appearance.
