Sculptural Colonial Chaise Longue in Wood and Hand-Woven Cane, 1920s
An elegant Dutch Colonial chaise longue in solid teak and hand woven webbing. Dutch East Indies, early 20th century. The gently flowing frame is constructed from solid teak, its continuous lines creating a sculptural reclining silhouette from the raised footrest to the shaped backrest. Sturdy and elegantly curved armrests emerge from the frame, while the restrained use of turned front legs provides a subtle classical reference without disturbing the overall simplicity of the design.
This chaise longue was made in what we now call Indonesia. At the time this country was a Dutch colony and called Nederlands-Indië. The colonial times of course carry rather dark and sad stories - yet from a historic point of view this period also is an important part of the history of The Netherlands. The cultural influences flowing both sides created some wonderful art, architecture, literature and furniture. For example, this stunning chaise longue. Although we now consider this lounge chair a work of art, it obviously wasn’t supposed to be when it was made - the sculptural element to it mainly comes from this being a very good and comfortable ergonomic design.
Overall the base shape of the chair is just wonderful, but there are all sorts of other beautiful details - like the very elegant feet up front, the curvy feet at the back and the hand woven cane webbing. This material is light and airy - great to lay on in warmer climates - and also carries a very elegant and exotic appearance. This wonderful chaise longue comes in a very good and original condition with only minor signs of age and use.
