Three plaster relief plaques made as teaching studies at Tekniska Skolan in Stockholm, the school of arts and crafts now known as Konstfack. Its students were working artisans and young designers, many of them women, who learned to draw from the history of ornament. The plaques cover two historic styles, Romansk and Grekisk Stil, and one of ornament's most enduring motifs, the acanthus leaf (Akantus Blad). Each is marked TS, with its title and plate number inscribed in the plaster. Reliefs of this kind stayed in use well into the twentieth century, when sculpture students at Konstfack were set to copy them in clay as a first lesson in observation. Hung together in a vertical line, the three read as a small history of ornamentation. Dimensions: Each approx. W 23 cm x H 24 to 24.5 cm x D 1.5 cm, Condition: Old chips and losses consistent with age and use. Sold as a set of three.

FAQ

How are the plaques mounted for hanging? Do they have integrated hanging hardware (e.g. keyhole, wire, hooks) on the back, or do they require a separate mounting solution?

Each plaque comes ready to hang with integrated hanging hardware on the back, requiring no additional mounting solution.

The listing states 'sold as a set of three.' Is it possible to purchase individual plaques separately, or only as the complete set?

These plaques are available exclusively as a complete set of three and cannot be purchased individually.

Is any documentation or provenance provided to confirm the Tekniska Skolan origin and dating (1880-1910)? Are the TS markings and plate numbers verifiable?

Yes, documentation is provided to confirm the Tekniska Skolan origin and 1880–1910 dating, with verifiable TS markings and plate numbers.

What are the recommended care and cleaning instructions for these aged, unsealed plaster reliefs? Are they sealed/treated against moisture or dust?

These plaster reliefs are unsealed, so we recommend gentle dusting with a feather duster. Avoid using water or any damp cloth, as moisture may damage the delicate surface.

Can you confirm the current surface finish shown in the photos? Is the off-white/beige tone original patina, or has any part been repainted or restored?

The off-white/beige tone is the original, untouched patina, with no repainting or restoration.
