Derbyshire School of Art Ceramic Wall Plaque with Original Case c.1970

Trade price:1.425 €
One-of-a-kind piece
A rare ceramic wall plaque by Stephanie Pegg, created at the Derbyshire School of Art and produced as part of the Pictures for Schools initiative — a post-war programme that brought original artworks into British schools and public institutions.   Formed from interlocking quatrefoil tiles glazed in alternating tones of olive, clay and ash, the piece embodies the spirit of British art-school ceramics of the period — experimental, modernist, and rooted in design education.   Founded in 1870, the Derbyshire School of Art (later part of the University of Derby) was among the leading regional centres shaping post-war craft and design pedagogy. By the 1960s and ’70s its studios had become an active contributor to Pictures for Schools, reflecting a national movement to integrate contemporary art into public life.   Retained in its original fitted carry case, stencilled ‘300’, denoting its inclusion in the school’s teaching and exhibition archive — a remarkable survival of both object and institutional history.   Height 43 cm. Width 43 cm. Depth 4 cm (plaque). Case 49 × 36 × 13 cm.
