Danish Organic Tripod Stool with Adjustable Seat, Early 20th Century

A remarkable Danish carpenter-made stool dating to the early 20th century, combining an expressive organic form with an ingenious height-adjustable construction. Made from wood and finished in black, the stool is defined by its sculptural three-legged base. The legs emerge almost seamlessly from the central body before gently curving outward, giving the piece an unusually fluid, almost anthropomorphic silhouette. Despite its utilitarian origins, the form has a distinctly modern and architectural presence. The circular seat is mounted on a substantial wooden screw mechanism, allowing the seating height to be adjusted simply by turning the seat. The exposed thread becomes an important visual element in itself, emphasizing the functional construction of the stool. Particularly beautiful is the contrast between the precise mechanical screw and the irregular, organic character of the base. The black surface has developed a rich patina over time, with visible wear, marks and irregularities that reveal the stool’s age and history. Made by a Danish carpenter around the beginning of the 20th century, this is an unusual piece of vernacular furniture whose strong sculptural quality allows it to sit naturally within both historic and contemporary interiors.
