Compressed Murano glass, with its melted-ice textures, appealed to designers of the time for its raw, sculptural look. Paired with a sober black base, it makes up this square ashtray with an architectural spirit. The base, in black lacquered wood, consists of two square plates separated by a band of clear glass that draws a luminous line along the edge. On top rests a block of compressed glass, with an irregular relief evoking ice, into which a large round well and several organically shaped cigarette rests are hollowed. The contrast between the matte black mass and the worked transparency of the glass is the piece’s whole strength. Good condition of use: the glass is clear, free of chips or cracks; the black lacquer shows a few small marks of use on the edges, consistent with the piece’s age. At 17 cm square by 6.5 cm high, this ashtray sits on a coffee table, desk or console, as an ashtray or a catch-all.
